Description

Goal: To familiarize students with the major events and trends of modern French history and have students engage in critical analysis of the most significant historiographical debates in the field.
Content: This course focuses on the development of politics and society in France during the 19th and 20th centuries. Particular attention will be paid to women's role in French society, the changing relationship between individuals and the state, the results of military defeat and loss of empire to understandings of French power, and the changing perceptions of what it means to be "French."
Taught: Spring. Alternate years.
Credit: 3 hours.
