Description

354: Teaching Literature to Children and Adolescents.
Goal: To examine various genres of literature and explore a variety of response strategies in the language arts early childhood classroom. The primary intent of the course is to acquaint participants with recently published children?s literature. The focus is on the effective uses of children?s literature in the early childhood classroom.
Content: This course examines various genres of literature and methods for teaching literature in the P-5 balanced literacy classroom. The following topics will be addressed: Using literature in the Balanced Literacy Classroom; reader response to literature; literature as a model for writing; and evaluation of trade books. 15 hours of field experiences are required.
Taught: Spring.
Prerequisites: EDR 300; Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
Credit: 3 hours.
